Is Humira covered by insurance?

Short answer: Usually yes — but increasingly as a biosimilar, not brand Humira. Most plans still cover adalimumab (Humira's drug), but since cheaper biosimilars arrived in 2023, many plans have moved brand Humira off the preferred list in favor of Amjevita, Cyltezo, Hyrimoz, Hadlima and others. So your plan may cover "Humira" only as one of these.

What changed: the biosimilar switch

Humira (adalimumab) lost exclusivity in 2023, and a wave of FDA-approved biosimilars followed. They're the same class of drug at a lower cost, so payers have strong incentive to prefer them. In practice some plans dropped brand Humira entirely. For example, in our data UnitedHealthcare's marketplace plans list zero brand Humira but carry several adalimumab biosimilars — so a member searching "Humira" would see it as not covered, while the biosimilar is.

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare cover Humira?

Generally yes — adalimumab is on most Medicare Part D plans, but on a high specialty tier with prior authorization, and many plans now prefer a biosimilar. Use the lookup to check your plan.

What are the Humira biosimilars?

FDA-approved adalimumab biosimilars include Amjevita, Cyltezo, Hyrimoz, Hadlima, Yuflyma, Hulio, Idacio, Abrilada, Yusimry and others. Which one your plan prefers varies by plan.

My plan says Humira isn't covered — what now?

That usually means the plan covers a biosimilar instead. Our lookup shows the covered same-ingredient options on your plan; bring that list to your prescriber to discuss switching.

Are biosimilars as effective as Humira?

The FDA approves biosimilars only when they have no clinically meaningful differences from the reference product. Still, any switch is a decision to make with your clinician.
